5 Reasons To Practice Breathwork in Menopause.

There are so many reasons why Breathwork can help when we are going through Menopause.

Here are five of them:

  1. Regular Breathwork practice increases oxygen flow to the brain, which means that our brain is able to function more effectively. This increased oxygen and blood flow to the brain helps in reducing brain fog and memory issues that are a familiar and frustrating part of Menopause!

  2. Deep rhythmic breathing activates the ‘rest & digest’ (aka Parasympathetic) part of the nervous system, which equals feelings of relaxation and calm. It also has the knock on effect of reducing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your body. So if you practice regularly you will feel less stressed and anxious.

  3. Sleep problems are common during Menopause, and can be debilitating if they are not addressed. Doing a gentle Breathwork practice before bed activates your bodies ‘rest and digest’ system helping you sleep more deeply and reduce night time wakings. Meaning that you can feel more energised to face the day.

  4. Many Women experience low energy and fatigue during Menopause. Practicing Breathwork helps release emotional energy in body. Freezing out, numbing or repressing our emotions takes up a lot of mental and physical energy and so allowing the energy to flow through you using the power of the breath, is the key to feeling more energised and peaceful.

  5. During Menopause, as oestrogen levels reduce, this can cause our cholesterol levels to increase, having a detrimental impact on our heart health. Regular conscious connected breathing practice can improve your heart health, and your heart rate coherence (which is the variability between your heart beats) making it more consistent due to increased blood flow and oxygen reaching the cells in our body.
